YOGA & DANCE BIO
Bast serves as a writer, poet, yoga & tantra teacher, holistic lifestyle mentor, visual and performance artist, fusion temple dancer, healing artist, and musician. She studied at New College of San Francisco with an emphasis on Art and Social Change. Her greater intention is to help facilitate 100% natural bliss & promote synergy between culture and nature.
At the age of 17, Bast met her root teacher, ShoShanna Rose, a cross-cultural mystic and yogini infused with teachings and initiations from Tibetan tantric Buddhism and Indian tantric Shaktism, Middle Eastern & Indian sacred dance, as well as Native-American, Sufi, and other earth-based spiritual traditions.
ShoShanna taught fusion bellydance along with it’s most sacred traditional functions: spiritual empowerment, reproductive health, birthing yoga, and embodied prayer. ShoShanna transmitted the essence of the Divine Feminine and encouraged Bast’s path as a yogini, teacher, healer, priestess, ritual artist, and modern temple dancer.
ShoShanna's teachings inspired Bast to later produce the Nouveau Devadasi Fusion Temple Dance Festival, celebrating modern and traditional forms of temple dance & peace-making through sharing sacred dance.
Bast began a passionate exploration of hatha yoga in 1993, studying different forms in depth including Vini, Kundalini, Iyengar, Anusara, Ashtanga, Raja, and Yin. In 2004 she completed the Interdisciplinary Hatha Yoga Teacher Training at the Nosara Yoga Institute. In 2005, Bast was named “Best Tantric Yoga Teacher” in SF Weekly’s Best of the Bay issue. In 2010 she completed the Anusara Yoga Teacher Training through Katchie Ananda. She continues to study teachings of the Sri-Vidya sakta tantra tradition through Janice Craig.
Bast received teachings in other forms of tantra, conscious sensuality, and yoga with Mantek Chia, Triambika, and Shaktiva Shivakti, and she underwent apprenticeship and initiation as a Dakini, a tantric priestess, with several personal mentors. The dakini essentially brings art and yogic artistry to all aspects of human life: love, desire, emotions, sensuality, and relationships.
Bast’s training and experience is distilled in her signature style, MEDICINE HEART Yoga. She guides students through a blissful and safe journey with a compassionate and celebratory approach.
Bast is the author HEART MEDICINE: A True Love Story, an intimate memoir about a shared healing experience with the African sacred medicine known as iboga.
